SKIMS Medical College conducts anti drug awareness session in Srinagar

Srinagar: SKIMS Medical College organised an awareness and sensitisation programme on substance abuse at a coaching institute in the Baghat area of Srinagar as part of the ongoing Nasha Mukt Jammu and Kashmir campaign.

Around 130 students, including boys and girls, attended the session aimed at educating youth about the risks associated with drug use and the importance of adopting healthy coping mechanisms.

The programme commenced with trainee doctors Zara and Farhaan, who addressed students on managing stress during preparation for competitive examinations. They emphasised the need to avoid substance use and encouraged constructive approaches to handling academic pressure.

Professor Ashfaq from the Department of Community Medicine described substance abuse as a serious concern, stating that while initiation may appear easy, withdrawal is often difficult. He underlined that resisting smoking can serve as the first step in preventing drug dependency.

Clinical Psychologist Kaunsar Sidiq delivered a detailed presentation on the psychological and social impact of substance abuse. Drawing from case experiences at the Addiction Treatment Facility of SKIMS Medical College, she highlighted the long term consequences of addiction and the challenges involved in recovery.

The session also featured an interactive segment, during which students raised queries that were addressed by the medical and counselling team.

The programme concluded with remarks by trainee doctor Zaid, who urged students to remain focused on their goals and maintain clarity of purpose in their academic pursuits.

Organisers said similar outreach programmes will continue in educational institutions under the guidance of Principal Fazlul Qadir Parray as part of sustained efforts to curb substance abuse. (via. Mir Iqbal)
