SRINAGAR: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Sunday pitched Jammu and Kashmir as an emerging higher education destination, inviting leading educational institutions to invest in the Union Territory under the newly enacted JK Private University Act.

Interacting with a delegation of education sector representatives in Bengaluru, the Chief Minister said the legislation has created significant opportunities for reputed institutions to establish campuses in Jammu and Kashmir and contribute to building a modern, inclusive and globally competitive academic ecosystem.

The JK Private Universities Bill, 2026, passed during the recent Budget Session of the Legislative Assembly and subsequently approved by the Lieutenant Governor, has been widely described as a landmark reform in the region’s higher education sector.

Abdullah said his government is committed to ensuring a transparent, investor-friendly environment to facilitate quality investments in education, while positioning Jammu and Kashmir as a vibrant academic hub capable of attracting students, researchers and scholarly collaborations from across India and abroad.

Advisor to the Chief Minister Nasir Aslam Wani, MLA Zadibal Tanvir Sadiq, senior officers and representatives from the education sector were also present during the interaction.
