SRINAGAR: Minister for Health and Medical Education, Social Welfare, and Education, Sakeena Itoo, on Saturday laid foundation stones for several development projects and inaugurated key public infrastructure in Kulgam district, underscoring the Government’s focus on rural development, education, healthcare, and connectivity across Jammu and Kashmir.

Among the major initiatives, the Minister laid the foundation stone for the ‘Viksit Village’ project at Yarikah-A in DH Pora and initiated the construction and upgradation of the Chiripora–Trengabal road under the Public Works (R and B) Department, estimated at around Rs 2 crore. She also inaugurated a 100-bedded Girls’ Hostel (KGBV Type IV) at Kulgam, an Ayush Dispensary at Wovri Khull, and a Higher Secondary School building at Khull DH Pora.

Speaking on the occasion, Sakeena Itoo said the projects are aimed at strengthening rural infrastructure and improving access to essential services, stating that the Government is committed to “inclusive and equitable development”, with special emphasis on underserved and remote areas.

She said the ‘Viksit Village’ initiative would improve basic amenities and infrastructure, transforming rural areas into self-reliant and sustainable settlements. She added that the road project would enhance connectivity, reduce travel time, and support local economic growth.

The Minister said the Government is accelerating rural road connectivity, expanding educational infrastructure, strengthening healthcare services, and broadening social security coverage to ensure development reaches all sections of society.

Describing the girls’ hostel as a significant step towards promoting girls’ education, she said it would help reduce dropout rates and encourage higher enrolment from far-flung areas. She directed officials to ensure safe accommodation and modern facilities for students.

Later, the Minister attended the final match of the Shaheed Wali Mohammad Itoo Memorial Cricket Tournament at Ardpora Khull, where she highlighted the importance of sports in youth development and reaffirmed government support for sports infrastructure and engagement activities.

The events were attended by MLA Kulgam MY Tarigami, Mission Director ICDS, Director AYUSH, Additional Deputy Commissioner Kulgam, senior officials, and a large number of locals.
