Srinagar, Apr 8: Celebrations broke out in several parts of Kashmir following the announcement of a ceasefire between the United States and Iran, with many residents hailing the development as a moment of relief and, in some pockets, a “victory” for Iran.

Large gatherings were reported from multiple areas, particularly Shia-majority localities. In Srinagar, people assembled in Saidakadal and Zadibal, while similar scenes were witnessed in parts of Budgam, Baramulla, Ganderbal, Pulwama and Bandipora districts.

Participants waved Iranian flags, burst firecrackers and distributed traditional kehwa and sweets, creating a festive atmosphere. Many expressed a mix of pride and relief following weeks of heightened tensions in West Asia.

“This ceasefire is a victory for Iran. They stood firm despite pressure,” said a resident in Budgam.

In Srinagar’s Saidakadal, men, women and children gathered in large numbers, raising slogans and expressing solidarity with Iran. Comparable scenes were reported from Magam and Pattan in Baramulla, and several areas of Bandipora, indicating a wider emotional response across the Valley.

“We are celebrating today after the strong statements and warnings issued earlier. Despite pressure, Iran did not bow,” said Hadi Abbas, a local resident.

Another resident, Aaqib Hussain, described the ceasefire as a shift in trajectory. “There was strong rhetoric and talk of escalation, but eventually a ceasefire was reached. It shows that dialogue prevailed,” he said.

The celebrations come against the backdrop of protests that had erupted across Kashmir shortly after the outbreak of the Iran conflict. Demonstrations were held in various districts, with participants voicing support for Iran and criticising the role of the United States and Israel.

In the days that followed, solidarity efforts expanded into fundraising drives across the Valley. Residents contributed money and valuables, with donations reportedly running into crores to support those affected by the conflict in Iran. Local groups and community members largely organised these initiatives.

Observers point to Kashmir’s deep-rooted cultural and historical ties with Iran—often referred to as “Iran-e-Sagheer” (Little Iran)—as a factor shaping public sentiment during such developments.

While the celebrations remained largely peaceful, officials said the situation is being monitored to ensure maintenance of law and order across the Valley.
