Srinagar, Mar 28: The CSIR–Indian Institute of Integrative Medicine on Saturday concluded a three-day hands-on training programme on downstream processing of medicinal and aromatic plants (MAPs), aimed at building technical skills in extraction and quality analysis.

Organised under the CSIR-Integrated Skill Initiatives, the programme brought together 20 participants from across the country, reflecting the growing demand for industry-oriented training in natural product processing and analytical techniques.

Director CSIR-IIIM, Dr. Zabeer Ahmed, who was the chief guest at the valedictory session, distributed certificates to participants and highlighted the importance of downstream processing in converting biodiversity into market-ready products. He stressed that extraction technologies and chromatographic techniques such as Gas Chromatography (GC) and High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) are critical for ensuring quality, safety, and efficacy in herbal and aromatic value chains.

He further emphasised the need for standardisation, traceability, and robust analytical systems to enable Indian products to meet both domestic and international regulatory standards. Dr. Ahmed noted that such skill-based programmes are essential for developing a workforce capable of translating scientific knowledge into scalable solutions for farmers, entrepreneurs, and industry.

Linking the initiative to the broader vision of “Viksit Bharat,” he said value addition in the MAP sector can enhance rural livelihoods and support innovation-driven growth. He also underscored the potential for integrating traditional AYUSH systems with modern healthcare through evidence-based approaches and advanced analytical tools.

The training programme offered participants an end-to-end understanding of downstream processing, including raw material handling, extraction techniques, separation processes, and analytical profiling.

On the first day, sessions covered the scope and significance of MAPs and the role of chromatography in phytochemical analysis. Participants also received practical training in oil extraction techniques. The second day focused on hands-on demonstrations of chromatographic methods, including sample preparation and interpretation of results.

On the final day, an intensive module on HPLC techniques was conducted, along with a visit to the institute’s Gene Bank facility to familiarise participants with germplasm conservation and research.

Earlier, Dr Nasir Ul Rasheed briefed participants on CSIR’s skill development initiatives, including newly launched job-oriented programmes aligned with national education policies to enhance employability.

The valedictory session featured a welcome address by Dr Qazi Parvaiz, while Dr Phalisteen Sultan presented programme outcomes. The proceedings were conducted by Dr Khalid Yousaf, and Dr Fayaz Malik delivered the vote of thanks.
