Srinagar: The Ministry of Rural Development has released over Rs 1,447 crore to Jammu and Kashmir under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) for the financial year 2025–26, the government informed the Rajya Sabha.

Of the total allocation, Rs 1,272.65 crore has been earmarked for wages, while Rs 174.57 crore is allocated for material and administrative expenses.

The funds have supported a large number of works across the Union Territory, generating employment and boosting rural development. Officials said wage payments are being made directly into beneficiaries’ bank accounts through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system, ensuring transparency and timely disbursal.

Pending liabilities stand at Rs 218.16 crore for wages and Rs 249.76 crore for material components, while no administrative dues are pending. All liabilities up to 2024–25 have been cleared.

The Ministry highlighted that the scheme’s implementation has been strengthened through digital platforms such as NREGASoft and the Public Financial Management System (PFMS), along with mobile and geospatial tools for monitoring, planning and grievance redressal.

Regular social audits and monitoring mechanisms are also in place to ensure accountability and effective execution of works under the scheme, officials added.
