
Srinagar, Mar 14: Women achievers from different walks of life from J&K were felicitated by the Kalyan Trust and Voluntary Medicare Society ( VMS) as part of International Women’s Day celebrations.
The event aimed at recognizing the strengths, achievements, and contributions of wome to promote the spirit of women’s empowerment.
The programme was attended by distinguished guests, social activists, professionals, students, management of VMS and members of civil society. The event began with a welcome address acknowledging the inspiring journey and humanitarian work of Kalyan Trust and Voluntary Medicare Society for the upliftment of mankind. Prof Dr Mir Mohammad Maqbool, President and Founder of VMS, delivered the introductory address and highlighted the importance of empowering women and ensuring equal opportunities in all spheres of life. He emphasized that empowering women leads to stronger families and a progressive society.
Dr Ruveda Salam, IRS, who was the Chief Guest on the occasion, spoke about the importance of recognizing the achievements of women and encouraging their participation in leadership roles, education and public service. Dr Ruveda Salam, who hails from Kupwara district, is widely acclaimed as the first woman from Kashmir to join the prestigious Indian Police Service after doing her MBBS and later on qualified IAS and was allotted IRS. She appreciated the efforts of VMS and Kalyan Trust for their continued commitment to social welfare and community development.
Prof Masooda Yasin also spoke on the occasion. Dr Harbakhsh Singh, a social worker, praised the two organisations for their commitment to the society. Students from Shafaqat Special/Inclusive School presented messages on women empowerment, highlighting the role of youth in building an inclusive and respectful society. Their participation added a meaningful and inspiring dimension to the programme. A number of women achievers from fields such as journalism, law, education, para sports, social work, and entrepreneurship were honoured for their remarkable contributions to society. As part of its humanitarian initiatives, Kalyan Trust provided livelihood support cheques to two beneficiaries of VMS, helping them move towards financial independence and sustainable livelihoods.
