Srinagar, Mar 14: Congress has said that Centre had to bow before the spirit of law and public pressure in revoking the detention of Sonam Wangchuk, whose detention was illegal and unjustified from day one.

Reacting to the order revoking the detention of Sonam Wangchuk under NSA by the Centre, JKPCC Chief Spokesperson Ravinder Sharma has said  that his detention was unjustified and against all norms of democracy and Constitution  from day one.

“He is a known climate scientist and peace activists and  Supreme court was hearing his petition against  detention where it was expected he would get justice. Centre had to bow before spirit of law and the public pressure. Good that good sense prevailed and truth has triumphed finally,” he said. “But who is responsible for his illegal detention in jail for nearly six months, he questioned and asked who and how he and his family will be compensated, for the mental and physical torture, suffered by them due to unjustified  detention and in jail for about six months,” he added.

He further said that now the LG administration should review and revoke the unjustified detention of MLA Mehraj Malik without further delay and also consider the cases of those similarly detained, without any substantial charge. Such actions of detentions like  that of Sonak Wangchuk bring bad name to our democracy, he added.
