SRINAGAR: Nearly 85 per cent of the proposed 1 Megawatt solar power project at Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University has been completed and the installation is expected to be fully operational by April 15, 2026, officials said on Saturday.
The solar facility is projected to reduce the university’s electricity expenditure by around Rs 8 lakh per month, amounting to nearly Rs 96 lakh annually, while also promoting the use of clean and sustainable energy on the campus.
Registrar Abhishek Sharma reviewed the progress of the project during a visit to the university campus in Rajouri. Officials informed him that a 50 kW solar power plant currently being installed forms part of the larger 1 MW solar capacity planned for the institution.
Speaking on the occasion, Sharma highlighted the importance of renewable energy, stating that the initiative would help reduce dependence on conventional power sources, cut carbon emissions and ensure long-term financial savings for the university.
The project is also expected to significantly enhance the availability of green energy on the campus once the full 1 MW capacity becomes operational.
Officials said the initiative reflects the university’s commitment to sustainable development and the promotion of eco-friendly power solutions within educational institutions.
The Registrar was accompanied during the inspection by the Executive Engineer of Electric Division Rajouri and other officials.
