
SRINAGAR: Members of Parliament from the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference and People’s Democratic Party president Mehbooba Mufti on Monday visited the Embassy of Iran in New Delhi to express condolences over the assassination of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and raised concerns about the safety of Kashmiri students studying in the country.
NC MPs Chowdry Mohammad Ramzan, Sajjad Ahmed Kichloo and Gurwinder Singh Oberoi visited the Iranian Embassy and signed the condolence book on the martyrdom of Khamenei. During the visit, they met the Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran to India, Mohammad Fathali, and expressed sorrow over the assassination of the Iranian leader.
The MPs conveyed condolences to the Government and people of Iran on behalf of the people of Jammu and Kashmir, NC president Farooq Abdullah and Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah.
During the meeting, the MPs also raised the issue of Kashmiri students currently studying in Iran and urged authorities to ensure their safety and facilitate their early return. They said the families of these students were deeply concerned and hoped that necessary measures would be taken to bring them back safely.
The MPs also condemned the attack carried out by the United States and Israel on Iran, describing it as a violation of international law and a threat to peace and stability in the region.
Separately, PDP president Mehbooba Mufti visited the Iranian Cultural Centre and the Iranian Embassy in New Delhi to offer condolences to the Iranian people over the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
In a statement posted on X, Mufti said she met Iranian representatives to express sympathies and discussed the situation of Kashmiri students studying in Iran amid the prevailing circumstances.
“I visited the Iranian Cultural Centre and Embassy in Delhi to offer my deepest condolences to the people of Iran during these difficult times and paid tributes to Ayatollah Ali Khamenei,” she said.
Mufti said she also raised the issue of Kashmiri students pursuing studies in Iran and urged authorities to ensure their safety and facilitate their early return.
Several students from Jammu and Kashmir are currently enrolled in medical and other professional courses at universities across Iran. Their families have expressed concern over their safety and appealed to the Government of India to assist in facilitating their return or relocation if required.
Some of the students studying in Iranian cities have also approached the Indian Embassy and the Ministry of External Affairs seeking close monitoring of the situation and assistance if necessary.
