SRINAGAR: Peoples Democratic Party president Mehbooba Mufti on Sunday condemned Israel and the United States over the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, while also criticising Muslim-majority countries for what she described as their silence on the issue.
In a post on X, Mufti termed the development a deeply tragic and shameful moment in history and alleged that Israel and the United States were boasting about Khamenei’s death. She questioned what she called the explicit and implicit support extended by certain Muslim nations, accusing them of placing convenience and expedience above conscience.
Today marks a deeply tragic & shameful point in history with Israel & USA boasting about the killing of Iran’s beloved leader Ayatollah Ali Khanenei. What’s more disgraceful & shocking is the explicit & implicit support given by Muslim countries who chose convenience & expedience… pic.twitter.com/WoIBWtDwNI

History will stand as a testament to who fought for justice and who helped the oppressors, she wrote, offering prayers for the people of Iran and expressing hope that they would overcome what she described as the forces of tyranny and injustice.
Addressing a press conference later in the day, the former chief minister condemned the Israeli strikes on Iran, describing them as the outcome of the nefarious agendas of what she termed war criminals. She specifically targeted Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, alleging that his actions were aimed at provoking Iran and destabilising the region.
Her remarks came as protests were held in parts of Kashmir against the killing of Khamenei. Demonstrators carried his photographs and raised pro-Iran slogans, expressing solidarity with the Iranian nation.
Mufti also voiced support for a protest call given by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, appreciating what she described as the peaceful nature of the demonstrations. She said the lack of international accountability was pushing the Middle East towards dangerous escalation.
Expressing concern for students and residents from Kashmir currently in Iran, Mufti said the situation was distressing for families back home. She expressed hope that the Government of India would take immediate measures to ensure their safety and facilitate their early return.
