Srinagar, Feb 15: Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather on Saturday extended greetings to the people, particularly the Muslim community, on the commencement of the holy month of Ramadhan.

Expressing hope that the month would usher in an era of peace and prosperity in the Union Territory, Rather, in a statement, urged the faithful to observe fasts in its true spirit and seek divine blessings through night prayers.

The Speaker made a fervent appeal to the public to extend moral and material support to the underprivileged, including orphans, widows, the destitute, and specially-abled individuals during the sacred period, as per KNS.

Rather also called upon the administration to put in place all requisite arrangements for the smooth observance of Ramadhan. He stressed the need for uninterrupted supply of electricity and drinking water, as well as the seamless availability of essential commodities. Emphasising the convenience of devotees offering night prayers and the pre-dawn meal (Sehri), Rather underlined the need for further improvement in street lighting, particularly in lanes and around mosques and shrines.

Specifically directing the district administration of Budgam, Rather urged for an intensification of market checking drives to maintain a check on prices of essential items. He asserted that stringent action must be taken against black marketers and hoarders engaging in unethical trade practices.
