Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir Police on Friday dismissed as false a social media post circulating on X, alleging militants had fired a rocket at an Army oil tanker in Baramulla, calling it a deliberate attempt to spread panic.

The police said in a statement that on February 5, 2026, at around 5:30 pm, an empty oil tanker (registration number JK01AN-8569) caught fire near Chinar Point, Pattan, while returning to Srinagar after unloading oil at Uri. The fire was swiftly brought under control by police personnel with assistance from the Fire and Emergency Services, Pattan.

“The incident was purely accidental and occurred due to a short circuit. No injuries or casualties were reported,” reads the statement.

The Baramulla Police cautioned that spreading false and misleading information on social media is a punishable offence and warned that those responsible would face strict legal action under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Information Technology Act, 2000.

They further urged the public to refrain from sharing unverified content and to rely solely on official sources for authentic information, reiterating their commitment to counter misinformation and maintain public order.
