Srinagar, Feb 6: On the occasion of World Cancer Day, Paras Health Srinagar organised ‘Umeed Ke Sitare’, a survivor-focused initiative aimed at celebrating cancer survivors while addressing key challenges faced by patients during diagnosis, treatment, and recovery. The programme brought together cancer survivors, caregivers, doctors, and hospital leadership to promote awareness, early detection, and emotional strength in the fight against cancer.

Amid rising cancer incidence and persistent gaps in early detection, the initiative was led by Dr Murtuza Habib, Facility Director, Paras Health Srinagar, along with the hospital’s clinical leadership including Dr Altaf Umar Ramzan, Chairperson – Neurosurgery; Dr Azhar Jan Batto, Director – Head & Neck Oncology; Dr Shabnam Bashir, Director – Breast & Colorectal Cancers; Dr Shah Naveed, Director – Surgical Oncology; and Dr Saquib Zaffar Banday, Director – Medical Oncology. They were joined by Dr Hamza Wani, Associate Director – Surgical Gastroenterology; Dr Aadil Ashraf, Senior Consultant – Gastroenterology; Dr Saqib Ahmad Shah, Senior Consultant – Medical Oncology; and Dr Najma Wani, Associate Consultant – Gynaecology, who highlighted advances in cancer treatment, the importance of early screening, and the role of emotional and family support in recovery.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Murtuza Habib, Facility Director, Paras Health Srinagar, said, “Many cancer patients struggle not just with the disease, but also with fear, misinformation, financial stress, and emotional isolation. ‘Umeed Ke Sitare’ is our effort to remind patients and families that cancer is treatable, survivorship is real, and timely medical intervention can save lives. This initiative reinforces our commitment to compassionate and comprehensive cancer care in the region.”

Emphasising the clinical perspective, Dr Azhar Jan Batto, Director – Head & Neck Oncology, Paras Health Srinagar, said, “A large number of cancer cases still reach hospitals at an advanced stage due to delayed reporting and lack of awareness. Through initiatives like ‘Umeed Ke Sitare’, we aim to educate people about early warning signs, reduce stigma, and encourage regular screening, which can significantly improve outcomes.”

As part of the initiative, Paras Health Srinagar also conducted a free oncology screening camp, benefiting over 60 individuals, to encourage preventive healthcare and early diagnosis. During the programme, cancer survivors also shared personal journeys of resilience and recovery, highlighting the role of early diagnosis, family support, and timely medical care.
