SRINAGAR: Several residential houses were damaged after a major fire erupted in the Bhagyas area of Chattabal, Srinagar in the early hours of Thursday, officials said.

Fire and Emergency Services (FES) officials said the State Fire Control Room at Batamaloo received an emergency call at around 6:31 am, prompting the immediate dispatch of a fire tender from the Safakadal station. Additional fire engines from the FES Headquarters, Syed Hameed Pora, Maharaj Gunj and Babdemb were rushed to the scene due to the densely populated nature of the locality.

Upon arrival, firefighters found three to four houses already engulfed in flames. The situation worsened when two to three LPG cylinders exploded, causing the fire to spread rapidly to adjoining and attached structures.

Officials said between eight and ten residential houses were completely gutted in the incident. Firefighters later brought the blaze under control, and cooling operations were continued to prevent any flare-up.

The cause of the fire is yet to be determined and is being investigated, officials added.
