Srinagar: The Indian Buildings Congress J&K Chapter on Sunday held a technical discussion to mark National Tourism Day, with emphasis on the need for safe, sustainable, and resilient infrastructure to support the tourism sector in Jammu and Kashmir.
Addressing the session, Er Irfan Shafi Parray, Honorary Secretary of the IBC J&K Chapter, said tourism remains a key pillar of the regional economy. He said planned and robust infrastructure plays a critical role in economic growth, employment generation, and balanced development.
He referred to recent spells of heavy snowfall, windstorms, and other extreme weather events, stating that these incidents have exposed the vulnerability of existing tourism infrastructure. He stressed the need for climate responsive planning to reduce risks and ensure continuity of tourism activities.
Speakers at the discussion underlined the importance of planned development, strict adherence to quality construction norms, and adoption of context specific building technologies suited to local conditions. They also called for greater focus on disaster resilient and environmentally sensitive infrastructure, keeping in view the region’s fragile ecology, seismic sensitivity, and exposure to weather related hazards.
The meeting also highlighted the role of renewable energy solutions in tourism areas. Participants stressed the use of solar lighting in tourist destinations, public spaces, and access routes to reduce reliance on conventional power. They said such measures help ensure uninterrupted lighting during power disruptions caused by snowfall, while improving safety and visitor convenience.
