SRINAGAR: A fire broke out in a school building near Grand Mamta Hotel at Nayi Sadak in Srinagar late on Tuesday evening, officials from the Fire and Emergency Services said.
According to officials, the Fire and Emergency Services Control Room at Batamaloo received a fire call at around 10:04 pm, following which fire tenders from Fire Station Gowkadal and Fire Station Babademb were immediately rushed to the spot under the command of Fire and Emergency Services Srinagar.
On reaching the location, firefighters found that tin sheds made of GCI sheets, forming part of a primary co-educational school building near the Dalgate–Nayi Sadak stretch, were engulfed in flames. Firefighting operations were launched promptly to contain the blaze.
Given the congested nature of the area and the risk of the fire spreading to adjoining structures, additional fire tenders from Fire Station Rainawari were pressed into service as reinforcement, officials said.
The fire was brought under control after sustained efforts by the firefighting teams, while cooling operations were continuing to rule out any possibility of re-ignition. No injuries or loss of life were reported in the incident.
The firefighting operation was led by Incharge Fire and Emergency Services Gowkadal Mushtaq Ahmed, Station Officer, under the supervision of Deputy Director Fire and Emergency Services Dr Mir Aqib Hussain, along with Mobilising Officer Aijaz Ahmad Shah.
The cause of the fire has not been determined so far, and an investigation is underway to ascertain the circumstances that led to the incident.
