SRINAGAR: Shopian Police delivered decisive blows to narcotics networks during 2025, reaffirming its resolve to safeguard society and uphold the rule of law across the district.

Officials said that during the year, a total of 72 FIRs were registered under relevant provisions of law at various police stations, leading to the arrest of 84 accused persons involved in drug trafficking and peddling. To neutralise repeat offenders and prevent future crimes, 10 notorious drug traffickers were booked under the stringent PIT NDPS Act, reflecting a strict zero-tolerance approach towards the drug menace.

As a result of sustained enforcement and intelligence-led operations, police seized 317.532 kilograms of narcotics, including charas, cannabis, poppy straw and heroin. In addition, 24,700 millilitres of codeine-based syrups, including Wylcerex, Sufinex and codeine, along with 195 tablets of Anxit and Alprazolam, were recovered. The total seized contraband has been valued at several crores of rupees.

In a major strike against the financial backbone of the narcotics trade, four residential properties acquired through proceeds of drug crime were seized after due legal process.

The properties are estimated to be worth around Rs 1 crore. Police further said that 716.866 kilograms of contraband and 23,700 millilitres of illicit drug bottles linked to 58 previous NDPS cases were successfully destroyed at Kashmir Health Care System, IGC Lassipora, involving drugs worth crores of rupees. Besides, wild cannabis cultivated on nearly 100 kanals of state land was identified and destroyed.

Shopian Police reiterated its steadfast resolve to eradicate drugs from the district and appealed to parents, youth and civil society to actively cooperate with law enforcement agencies.

Officials said information provided by the public is treated with utmost confidentiality and remains crucial in protecting lives and future generations. The anti-drug campaign, they added, will continue with greater intensity, stronger enforcement and focused preventive measures to ensure that Shopian remains safe, secure and drug-free. [KNT]
