KU-JKSTIC holds 2-day Math Fest to mark National Mathematics Day

Srinagar, Dec 23: The Department of Mathematics, University of Kashmir (KU), in collaboration with Jammu & Kashmir Science, Technology & Innovation Council (JKSTIC), organised a two-day Math Fest 2025 at the Main Campus to commemorate the National Day of Mathematics, celebrating the 138th birth anniversary of Srinivasa Ramanujan.

The event aimed to promote mathematical awareness, strengthen academic outreach, and inspire young minds, particularly school students, towards mathematics.

Vice-Chancellor, KU, Prof Nilofer Khan, in her message, said that Mathematics forms the backbone of scientific temper and logical reasoning, adding, “such events play a vital role in nurturing analytical thinking among young learners.” She further said that celebrating the legacy of Ramanujan through academic engagement, research dialogue and school outreach reflects the University’s commitment to strengthening foundational sciences and inspiring the next generation of scholars.

Speaking at the inaugural session, Dean, School of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, KU, Prof Manzoor A. Malik, highlighted the enduring relevance of Ramanujan’s contributions and emphasised the need for sustained initiatives that nurture curiosity and excellence in mathematical sciences. Earlier, Prof MA Khanday, Head, Department of Mathematics KU and Convener, while welcoming the participants, noted that the festival seeks to bridge classrooms, research, and society by creating inclusive platforms for learning and interaction. The Math Fest featured thematic sessions including the National Day of Mathematics celebration, Alumni Meet-2025, School Outreach Programme, and research paper presentations.

Invited expert lectures were delivered by Prof PG Siddheshwar (Christ University, Bengaluru), Prof. Subuhi Khan (AMU), and Prof. Renu Jain, former Vice-Chancellor, DAVV Indore, covering Ramanujan’s legacy, mathematics in everyday life, and advanced mathematical concepts. A special outreach programme engaged over 150 school students from Classes VIII–XII through interactive talks and medal distribution. Research scholars from various institutions also presented papers, promoting academic exchange. The event concluded with a valedictory session, reaffirming the Department’s commitment to strengthening mathematical learning, alumni ties, and research culture.
