Srinagar, Dec 22: Security forces in Kashmir significantly escalated surveillance and “anti-sabotage” operations across Srinagar on Monday, while speculative Cordon and Search Operations (CASOs) were reported from parts of the Valley.
The move comes as part of a high-level security grid established ahead of the upcoming events that include Republic Day celebrations.
Officials confirmed that joint teams of security personnel conducted meticulous sweeps in the congested business hubs of Amira Kadal and Maharaja Bazaar.
These areas, known for their dense population and proximity to the main venue, were the primary focus of Monday morning’s activities.
To ensure no security gaps, the security forces deployed sniffer dogs to sweep residential units and storefronts for explosives.
Manual metal detectors and deep-search mine detectors were utilised to scan for hidden arms or ammunition.
Specific blocks were briefly cordoned off to allow for thorough inspections of “vital installations” and older structures.
While the searches did not cause any disruptions to the morning commute, official sources said that no suspicious objects or contraband have been recovered so far.
The heightened activity near Bakshi Stadium – the traditional venue for major national events in the Valley – is only one part of a broader security strategy.
Mobile checkpoints (MCPs) have been established at key intersections throughout Srinagar.
Commuters and pedestrians are being subjected to random frisking and identity verification.
Official sources said that drone surveillance and CCTV monitoring have been intensified around the stadium perimeter and the Secretariat area.
They said that additional check posts have been set up along the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway and entry points into the city to monitor the movement of vehicles entering the capital.
At the same time, reports of speculative CASOs have emerged from several parts of Kashmir over the past few days.
Similar operations were recently carried out in Lal Chowk, the city’s commercial and symbolic centre.
Residents in areas of north and south said security forces conducted brief searches, established temporary checkpoints, and questioned commuters during early morning and late evening hours.
While no official statement has confirmed the nature or outcome of these operations, official sources described them as precautionary and intelligence-led.
Officials have so far refrained from commenting on the reports, maintaining that security deployments in Srinagar and other parts of Kashmir are routinely adjusted based on threat assessments.
