Ganderbal: In a concerted effort to promote environmental conservation and sustainable livestock development, the Mountain Research Centre for Sheep & Goat (MRCS&G), Shuhama, SKUAST-K, in collaboration with the Ganderbal Press Association (GPA), organised a plantation drive of fodder tree saplings at the Shuhama campus on Friday.
The plantation drive was formally inaugurated by Senior Scientist and Head, MRCS&G, Dr Parvaiz Reshi, along with GPA President Sofi Ayaz. The event was attended by Students Welfare Officer, FVSc & AH, Dr Aijaz Qureshi; Medical Officer, FVSc & AH, Dr Parvaiz Ahmed; SHO Ganderbal, Sajad Assad; DO Shuhama, Riyaz Ahmad Wani; members of the Ganderbal Press Association, and scientists from MRCS&G. Mulberry saplings were planted by the dignitaries to mark the occasion.
Addressing the gathering, Dr Reshi said that SKUAST-K is undertaking plantation drives across all its campuses as part of a dedicated green initiative aimed at strengthening environmental sustainability while supporting livestock-based livelihoods. He highlighted the significance of fodder tree plantations, noting that such initiatives not only improve environmental health but also provide nutritious leaf fodder for animals at the research centre.
Dr Reshi further informed that MRCS&G has planned the plantation of nearly 20,000 saplings. The ongoing drive began in early November and is scheduled to resume after the winter season in March. He expressed appreciation to the Ganderbal Press Association, District Police Ganderbal, and all participants for their active involvement and commitment towards enhancing green cover, environmental protection, and livestock welfare.
