Srinagar: Raising the issue of poor communication infrastructure in North Kashmir’s frontier areas, Baramulla MP Er. Abdul Rashid on Wednesday told the Lok Sabha that several border pockets continue to remain without even ‘basic’ mobile connectivity.
Speaking during the Question Hour of the ongoing Winter Session of Parliament, Er. Rashid, as per news agency GNS, said that residents of Karnah, Machil, Gurez and Uri are being compelled to live without functional mobile networks, noting that “far from 4G or 5G, even basic towers are missing.”
Drawing attention to Gujjarpati village, the MP said he had seen reports during his incarceration showing villagers “pleading with the Lieutenant-Governor and the Chief Minister for five days merely to secure phone access.”
Urging the Centre to intervene, Er. Rashid questioned the rationale for what he described as ‘prolonged neglect’. “Why should border areas in Kupwara and Baramulla suffer?” he asked.
He also contested the Ministry’s claim that it had communicated with all Members of Parliament regarding connectivity measures. “I am an MP lodged in Tihar Jail, yet I have not received any such letter,” he said, adding that representatives from remote constituencies should also be afforded an opportunity to articulate their concerns.
