Srinagar: In the wake of the Budgam bypoll defeat, the Jammu & Kashmir National Conference (JKNC) is reportedly deliberating disciplinary action, including the possible expulsion of its Srinagar MP Agha Syed Ruhullah Mehdi, amid growing resentment within the party over his withdrawal from the campaign at a crucial stage, sources said.
The internal discontent has particularly intensified after Chief Minister Omar Abdullah publicly criticised Ruhullah’s decision to distance himself from the bypoll effort, calling the move politically self-damaging.
Speaking to reporters, Omar said Ruhullah had “politically harmed himself” by stepping back from the campaign, a move he suggested was aimed at signalling displeasure to the party leadership. He described the act as equivalent to “cutting your nose to spite your face.”
“Ruhullah hurt his own prospects in an attempt to send me a message,” Omar said. “And let me tell you, the candidate who has now won from Budgam will not make it easy for Ruhullah to reclaim his ground.”
Sources told Alfaaz – The Words, that the remarks have already fueled conversations within the NC about whether Ruhullah’s conduct constituted a breach of discipline serious enough to warrant organisational action. “The mood is not in his favour right now,” they said, adding, ” the party may take some serious action to set a precedent, even though possible expulsion can’t be entirely ruled out.”
