SRINAGAR: Police in South Kashmir’s Anantnag have recovered an AK-47 rifle from the locker of a former senior resident doctor at Government Medical College (GMC) Anantnag, officials said on Friday. The individual has been detained for questioning, according to India Today.
The detained doctor has been identified as Adeel Ahmad Rather, son of Abdul Majeed Rather, and a resident of Qazigund, Anantnag. He served as a senior resident at GMC Anantnag until October 24, 2024.
Officials said the weapon was found in Dr Rather’s personal locker at the college. Both the doctor and the rifle are now in the custody of Srinagar Police, who are conducting the investigation alongside the Joint Interrogation Centre (JIC) Anantnag.
A case has been registered under sections 7/25 of the Arms Act and sections 13, 28, 38, and 39 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. Police are interrogating Dr Rather to determine the circumstances surrounding the recovery and any potential motives.
Authorities have not disclosed the origin of the rifle or how it came to be stored in the locker. The investigation remains ongoing, and police are tracking possible forward linkages. A spokesperson confirmed, “Adeel and the AK-47 are with Srinagar police.” Further updates are expected as inquiries progress.
