SRINAGAR: The Jammu Kashmir Government has said that a sewage treatment plant (STP) with a capacity of 9.5 million litres per day (MLD) is being planned for Sopore town to address the problem of untreated sewage and wastewater flowing into the River Jhelum.

Replying to a question raised by legislator Irshad Rasool Kar in the Assembly, the Government confirmed that untreated sewage and waste from the existing drainage network is currently being discharged into the Jhelum at multiple points in Sopore. To tackle this, the Urban Local Bodies Department is in the process of establishing sewage treatment plants across all municipal councils, including Sopore.

The Government said that the preparation of a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the construction of the STP at Sopore is presently underway. The proposed plant will be set up at Village Aadipora, recorded as Shamilat-i-Deh Mahfooz Kachari, under Survey No. 2039 min, Tehsil Sopore, on a land area measuring eight kanals.

The STP will become operational after the execution of the project as per the timelines to be finalised in the DPR. Officials said the initiative forms part of the broader government effort to prevent sewage discharge into the Jhelum and improve urban sanitation infrastructure across the Union Territory.
