Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Friday reiterated his government’s commitment to the restoration of statehood, saying that sustained efforts are being made to secure greater powers for the Union Territory.

Speaking to reporters in Kulgam, the Chief Minister said the delay in fulfilling the promise of statehood was unjustified. “We were hoping that the Centre would restore statehood within a year. We don’t know why there is a delay, only the BJP knows. But our fight for it will continue,” Omar said.

Reiterating that statehood was among the core assurances made to the people, Omar added that his government is pursuing all constitutional and political avenues to see it restored.

On the revival of the historic Darbar Move between Srinagar and Jammu, the Chief Minister said the decision was in line with commitments made before the elections. “We had promised to revive this time-honoured tradition, and since 2021, it has been reinstated,” he said.

On a question regarding Reservation issue, Omar said that the cabinet sub-committee, headed by Sakeena Itoo, had completed its report, which has now been approved. “A cabinet memo is being circulated and will be sent to the Lieutenant Governor for formal approval,” he informed.

The Chief Minister on the occasion also assured farmers that their grievances were being addressed promptly. “Assessment of crop losses due to recent damages has been completed, and discussions with the Centre are underway for a relief package similar to those extended to other states,” he said.

Responding to questions on revocation of FIRs filed during COVID-19 restrictions, Omar said, “Law and order is not under the elected government’s control at the moment. Once we regain those powers, we will fulfil our pending promises too.”
