SRINAGAR: Controlled Atmosphere (CA) cold storage units across Jammu and Kashmir are helping apple growers secure better returns, with nearly 60 per cent of stored produce yet to enter the market amid expectations of stronger demand and firmer prices in the coming weeks.

According to industry estimates, about 40 per cent of apples stored in CA units have already been released into markets, while the remaining 60 per cent continues to be preserved to take advantage of improved demand conditions and price stability.

Growers say that the ability to store apples for longer periods without quality deterioration has significantly improved their earnings and reduced distress sales during peak harvest season.

“Earlier, we were forced to sell everything immediately after harvest when prices were low,” said Abdul Rashid, an orchardist from south Kashmir. “This year, the apples we kept in cold storage fetched much better rates as there was no demand in the main season. It has covered our input costs and given us real profit.”

Another grower, Ghulam Nabi from Sopore, said the market response to apples released from CA units has been encouraging. “The apples released from CA units got handsome returns. With festivals and the marriage season approaching, we expect demand to rise further and prices to improve,” he said.

Experts said CA storage helps regulate supply in the market, preventing price crashes caused by oversupply immediately after harvest. By releasing produce gradually, growers can sell during high-demand periods.

“Cold storage has given us control over when to sell,” growers said. “Instead of middlemen dictating prices, farmers can now wait for the right time.”

They added that during the peak harvest period, demand was low, prompting growers to store their produce in CA units, which were fully utilised. With demand now improving, growers are receiving better returns.

The improved income from stored apples is also helping orchardists reinvest in better sprays, packaging and modern farming practices, creating a positive impact across fruit-growing regions.

Growers said expanding CA storage facilities to remote fruit-producing areas would further benefit small and marginal farmers.

“Cold storage is no longer a luxury; it is a necessity for apple farming,” said one orchard owner. “It protects our hard work and ensures fair value for our produce.”

He added that controlled storage allows growers to release produce in line with market demand rather than selling in bulk, ensuring better price realisation.

With a majority of apples still in storage and demand expected to strengthen, CA cold storage units are increasingly being seen as a key factor in improving grower incomes and stabilising Kashmir’s fruit economy.
