5.9 Magnitude Earthquake in Afghanistan Sends Tremors Across J&K

Srinagar: A relatively high intensity earthquake struck parts of Jammu and Kashmir at around 9:42 pm on Friday, causing panic among residents across several districts.

According to initial reports, the earthquake measured 5.9 on the Richter scale, with its epicentre located in the Afghanistan–Tajikistan border region. The tremor occurred at 16:12:58 UTC.

Data indicates the epicentre at coordinates 36.52°N and 71.01°E, with a depth of 175 kilometres. The information was shared by Kashmir Weather, citing initial data from GFZ.

Tremors were felt across both Kashmir and Jammu divisions, prompting people to rush out of their homes and buildings as a precaution. The shaking, though brief, was strong enough to be widely felt.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage to property at the time of filing this report. Authorities are monitoring the situation and assessing any potential impact.
