SRINAGAR: The Food Safety Department of Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday seized 21 quintals of adulterated cheese and a large quantity of expired mustard oil from an unregistered godown in the Gangyal area on the outskirts of Jammu city, officials said.
The seizure followed a raid conducted on the basis of a tip-off and comes just days after Chief Minister Omar Abdullah directed authorities to intensify food safety inspections across the region.
According to an official of the department, the raid uncovered 2,100 kilograms of adulterated cheese along with 78 tins of expired mustard oil stored illegally in a building not authorised for food storage. No individuals were found at the location during the operation.
Samples of the seized items were tested on-site using a mobile food testing laboratory. The department has initiated legal proceedings to identify and prosecute those responsible.
Authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious food-related activities. “People must come forward to inform us about wrongdoers who are playing with the health of the masses,” the official said.
The crackdown is part of a broader campaign to ensure food safety and protect public health throughout Jammu and Kashmir. (KDC)
