SRINAGAR: More than 21.56 lakh cases under the Motor Vehicles Act were taken up in Jammu and Kashmir over the past three years through National Lok Adalats and other judicial services mechanisms, with 18.31 lakh cases disposed of and total settlements amounting to Rs 806.16 crore, according to official data tabled in Lok Sabha.

The figures pertain specifically to cases under the Motor Vehicles Act, including traffic challans and other compoundable offences, settled through National Lok Adalats as well as through legal services authorities outside the Lok Adalat framework.

In 2023, National Lok Adalats took up 5,30,332 Motor Vehicles Act cases and disposed of 4,04,665 cases, realising settlements worth Rs 246.67 crore. During the same year, judicial services outside the Lok Adalat mechanism took up 31,572 such cases and disposed of 28,170 cases, with settlements amounting to Rs 36.39 crore. Combined, 5,61,904 Motor Vehicles Act cases were taken up in 2023, 4,32,835 were disposed of and total settlements stood at Rs 283.06 crore.

In 2024, National Lok Adalats handled 7,27,975 cases under the Motor Vehicles Act and disposed of 6,79,992 cases, with settlement amounts reaching Rs 223.03 crore. Outside the Lok Adalat framework, 67,728 cases were taken up and 61,025 disposed of, resulting in settlements worth Rs 41.57 crore. Together, 7,95,703 cases were taken up in 2024, 7,41,017 were disposed of and total settlements amounted to Rs 264.60 crore.

For 2025, National Lok Adalats took up 7,95,356 Motor Vehicles Act cases and disposed of 6,55,754 cases, realising Rs 246.49 crore in settlements. In addition, 3,289 cases were taken up outside the Lok Adalat mechanism, of which 2,095 were disposed of, with settlements amounting to Rs 11.99 crore. The combined figures for 2025 show that 7,98,645 cases were taken up, 6,57,849 were disposed of and settlements totalled Rs 258.49 crore.

Across the three-year period from 2023 to 2025, a total of 21,56,252 Motor Vehicles Act cases were taken up through National Lok Adalats and other legal services mechanisms in Jammu and Kashmir. Of these, 18,31,701 cases were disposed of, with cumulative settlements amounting to Rs 806.16 crore. The data indicates that National Lok Adalats accounted for the overwhelming share of disposals and settlement value each year, forming the principal mechanism for resolution of Motor Vehicles Act cases in the Union Territory.
