2 women dead as gastroenteritis outbreak surfaces in Rajouri hamlet

Rajouri, Jun 30: With three more patients arriving in the hospital at Rajouri on Monday, the total number of patients suffering with gastroenteritis and diarrhoea in Sakri village of Rajouri has arrived to 37 out of which seven are still under treatment in the hospital at Rajouri while three at Jammu.

Two deaths due to this illness have been reported on Monday with one from GMC Jammu and another one from GMC Rajouri. The cases of gastroenteritis as well as diarrhoea were first reported on Thursday after which the cases are being reported on daily basis with a number of families in this village are affected with the illness and health authorities have already established water contamination of E-coli bacteria to be cause of illness among people.

A total of 37 patients from this village have been hospitalised during last five days out of which seven patients are still under treatment in GMC Rajouri and 3 in GMC Jammu while other patients have been discharge one by one. Meanwhile, a 70 years old woman from this village who was suffering with gastroenteritis and diarrhoea from last two days died in GMC Jammu.

The family members including the grandson of deceased women told that har health deteriorated two days ago and she started to vomit abruptly along with other symptoms of diarrhoea after which the patient was admitted in GMC Rajouri and later referred to GMC Jammu. “She died in GMC Jammu today and the postmortem examination of body was conducted in GMC Rajouri.” the family members said.

She is identified as Durgi Devi (70) wife of Dhani Ram resident of Sakri. In another incident, a 40 years old woman from another village located at a distance of four kilometres from Sakri village died during treatment in GMC Rajouri. The women was suffering from gastroenteritis and diarrhea from last one day.”She was taken to GMC Associated Hospital Rajouri on Sunday morning where she remained under treatment but her health deteriorated with time and finally she collaged in the early morning hours on Monday.” said family members of deceased identified as Zareena wife of Dil Mohammad resident of Trala village of Rajouri.

The family members also levelled allegations of poor treatment given to the woman saying that she could have survived in case of proper treatment.

Meanwhile, three more patients of diarrhoea and gastroenteritis from Swari Village have been reported on Monday who all have been hospitalized in GMC Hospital Rajouri. Chief medical officer Rajouri Dr Manohar Lal Rana said that the mobile medical unit is still camping in the village and all steps have been taken to ensure immediate medical aid of symptomatic patients soon after they are reported in the village.
